Back Rank

For players who keep score.

You already see it — that's why you're here. Three consecutive sacrifices on a single square, and the king never leaves the corner it built for itself.

Chess merch drawn the way chess books look

Platform stores sell you a logo. Federation shops sell an event souvenir. The marketplaces sell knight puns. Nobody designs chess goods the way chess literature looks — diagrams, notation, annotation glyphs, ECO codes, set with hardcover restraint.

Back Rank treats the notation system as the art. Drawn like a diagram we'd sign a scoresheet over: coordinates on, light square on h1, every position engine-clean. If you keep score, this was made for you.

The first run

Diagram-plate tees, scoresheet mugs, the knight's-tour poster, ECO bookplates. One strong element each, all positions original, all made to order. Held at a premium anchor because club players pay for craft.

Questions from the skittles room

What makes Back Rank different from other chess merch?

Everything is drawn from the notation system itself — real diagram positions, scoresheet ledgers, Informant glyphs, ECO monograms — with the restraint of a hardcover games collection. A non-player sees a handsome typographic object; a player reads the position and sees the mate coming. Every diagram is drawn to convention and every position is engine-verified before it ships.

Are the positions on your designs real and sound?

Yes. Our signature is an original composition — 1.Qe8+ Rxe8 2.Rxe8+ Rxe8 3.Rxe8# — engine-checked, every Black reply forced. We draw boards White-at-bottom with coordinates on and a light square on h1, because we know you will check.

Do you cover openings and over-the-board play, or just sell things?

Both. The publication side covers openings and theory, tactics and patterns, sets and clocks, tournament culture, training, and chess history. The guides are free; the shop funds them.

How does Back Rank make money?

Two ways: original apparel and print, made to order, and affiliate commissions when you buy recommended gear through our links. As an Amazon Associate we may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you, and no brand buys its way into a ranking.
