The answers
Do I really have to keep score in a rated game?
In most rated over-the-board play, yes — both players record every move on a scoresheet. It looks intimidating your first time and becomes automatic by your second. Algebraic notation is compact and unambiguous: piece letters K Q R B N, bare squares for pawn moves, x for captures, + for check, # for mate, O-O for castling.
What is a back-rank mate, and when should I make luft?
A back-rank mate is checkmate delivered along the king’s first rank by a rook or queen when the king’s own unmoved pawns block its escape. Make luft — a quiet pawn move, usually the h-pawn, that opens a flight square — when your back rank is genuinely loose: heavy pieces trading off, a defender about to disappear. Do not play it reflexively; a tempo is a tempo.
What should I expect at my first tournament?
Pairings by rating, a clock you press after each move, a scoresheet, and the skittles room where games get analyzed afterward. Bring a set and clock if the event asks, arrive early, and read our guide to your first rated tournament for the unwritten rituals online play never taught you.
How does Back Rank make money?
Two ways: original apparel and print, made to order, and affiliate commissions when you buy recommended gear through our links. As an Amazon Associate we may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you. No brand pays for placement in a ranking.
How long does merch take to arrive?
Everything is made to order: 2–5 business days on the press, then shipping. Most orders arrive within 5–10 business days total, with tracking emailed on dispatch.
